At this year’s transport logistic trade fair in Munich, PMI actively supported networking among young female logistics professionals. At the themed roundtable “What role do networks, associations and professional organizations play in personal career development?”, our managing director Andrea Walbert facilitated a lively exchange of experiences between logistics professionals of all ages.
One of the key takeaways – echoed throughout the event – was:
Networking is like going to the gym – only through regular and active participation can you truly grow.
Passive attendance isn’t enough. It takes courage to start conversations, ask questions, share experiences, and stay open to new perspectives.
Participants emphasized that effective networking doesn’t require a large group: “Two people already make a group.” Valuable dialogue can begin with just one exchange. The best insights often come from the sidelines of the main topic, in unexpected conversations. Many attendees shared how these seemingly random encounters led to key contacts, exciting projects, or inspiring ideas.
Another point raised: You don’t always need to contribute actively to add value. Sometimes simply telling your own story can inspire, encourage, or motivate others. Mentors often emerge organically from networks, through repeated interaction, shared interests, and mutual support.
Networks thrive on willingness, change, and action – those who engage can help shape the future.
A particularly practical tip for more introverted or shy personalities: Take on a role or position in a professional association or network. It gives you a defined responsibility, makes you approachable, and naturally creates connections.
Conclusion of the session:
The true power of networking doesn’t lie solely in what you know, but in who you grow with.
It’s about building meaningful connections, earning trust, and learning from others – often beyond your comfort zone.
Those who embrace this mindset benefit not only professionally, but also personally.
