Lean Learning

The training game-changer

Concerns are growing over the effectiveness of traditional corporate training programs, with 75% of managers and 70% of employees dissatisfied with their current Learning & Development (L&D) initiatives. These programs often fail to provide applicable skills, with only 12% of employees using new skills learned. What's needed is a transformation in training methods (HBR, 2019, Steve Glaveski).

Enter lean learning, a method modeled after Toyota's lean manufacturing system. This approach is about immediate application of knowledge, continuous feedback, and repeated learning cycles. It encourages a focus on the essential 20% of a new skill, offering personalized content, and promotes peer learning and micro courses. Crucially, it values business outcomes over credits earned.

In a world where adaptability is key, lean learning could be the solution to bridge the gap between skills training and real-world application, thus maximizing the effectiveness of corporate training programs. For many years, we have been integrating lean learning into our programs to ensure that our training is timely, relevant, and truly beneficial to our students' careers.

In 2024, we are introducing Supply Chain Practice Workshops focusing on the main pain points which we revealed in our survey amongst 150 supply chain executives: Circularity, Sustainable Business, Growth by S&OP, Working Capital Management and Risk & Total-Cost-of-Ownership (TCO).

This workshop series, developed in partnership with Inchainge (www.inchainge.com), offers a hands-on learning experience through business simulations, designed to deepen participants' understanding of key supply chain topics and challenges. Through practical activities and decision-making exercises in the simulation, participants in teams of 4 gain practical insights into real-world challenges. Experienced supply chain experts serve as trainers, sharing their expertise and guiding participants throughout the workshop. Moreover, the workshop format includes competition between groups, fostering collaboration, strategic thinking, and innovative problem-solving skills. This dynamic learning environment encourages participants to apply their knowledge, engage in critical discussions, and ultimately enhance their proficiency in supply chain management.
