The Young Professionals Challenge 2024 on July 11th in Hamburg offered 12 Supply Chain talents an engaging and enlightening day focused on "Transformation and Circular Economy in the Supply Chain". The PMI Production Management Institute from Planegg hosted this prestigious event, now in its 13th edition held biannually.
Challenge and Competition
Teams from three companies – BOEHRINGER, Lindt & Sprüngli, and Tchibo – took on the challenge to showcase their skills in Supply Chain and sustainability. The highlight was the business simulation "The Blue Connection", which simulated the transformation of an E-Bike manufacturer from a linear to a circular business model. Emphasis was placed on understanding multiple combined circular strategies and change management.
The Business Simulation
The Blue Connection challenged participants to convert a linear supply chain into a circular value chain. Participants assumed roles such as Vice President Finance, VP Purchasing, VP Supply Chain, and VP Sales, addressing real-time challenges of transformation. The simulation provided them with a deep understanding of the complexities and opportunities of circular economy.
Learning Objectives and Insights
Through the simulation, Young Professionals learned how circular strategies can foster new growth and differentiation. They realized that waste can be used as a valuable resource rather than just discarded. Participants developed strategies prioritizing both business continuity and environmental protection.
Event Conclusion
After four intense rounds, the team from Tchibo impressed with a ROM (Return-on-Material) of 3.28 Euro/kg and an ROI (Return on Investment) of 2.57% in the final round, securing victory over other teams. Additionally, all teams qualified for The Fresh Connection Global Professional Challenge 2024. Congratulations!
Participants tackled realistic supply chain transformation challenges, honing their decision-making skills under pressure. The insights gained will impact their professional lives, supporting their companies towards more sustainable practices. Networking among teams was also robust, with the winning team receiving one year of free access to PMI's E-Learning Academy per team member.
